Learning from Airline Pilots
Each flight as a student or instructor can be treated with the professionalism you'll find from airline pilots.
Why wait until airline training to develop the learning skills and attitude that will make you successful?
Be Punctual and Prepare for each Flight
Passengers expect the crew to show up on time but actually the crew have met much earlier to brief, review weather and other information and update manuals.
Planning to be early to lessons allows you to also review all information, and not have to rush to complete tasks ahead of the flight.
A proper review of manuevers and completion standards with the instructor will allow you to learn from previous lessons, and know what is expected.
Find ways to organize flight paperwork, be professional !
Brief Like Airline Pilots
Airline pilots brief take-offs and approach / landings.
Both pilots know how these manuevers will be performed, in accordance with approved profiles.
You can also brief these manuevers during training flights;
-
what type of take-off will be performed, what direction is the departure, what altitude will you initially climb to?
-
what type of approach to the airport do you expect? (visual / ifr approach)
-
what altitudes are other factors are in the approach
-
which runway do you expect? what length and elevation is it, where on the airport do you plan to taxy to after landing, and which exit on the runway are you planning to depart it?
-
if you do a go-around or missed approach, what are you intentions?
Fly Like An Airline Pilot
Passengers like a smooth flight, and developing smoothness with the flight controls is essential to providing as enjoyable a flight as possible.
While training flights require manuevers to demonstrate control of the aircraft, you can learn and practice to fly with smooth inputs.
A habit of 'yanking and banking' the aircraft will
not go down well with passengers (or students) in any aircraft, and doesn't display the professionalism of a smooth pilot.
Train Like A Professional
Training at an airline is a serious business.
Simulator instructors give pre and post flight briefings on each lesson, they do not simply say "great, see you next time". Make sure you as an instructor give the instruction you'll desire, or as a student, make sure you receive proper instruction.
Look Like An Airline Pilot
Do you and your instructor dress smartly, and look like professionals?
If your school has a uniform, wear it with pride.
Why wait to you are working at an airline?
