Attitude, In Flying It's Everything

When you start out as a new hire pilot, there's one thing you learn, attitude is everything !

Captains will work with someone who shows a good attitude.

In the airline environment there's a lot to learn.

You know how to fly, just not at the busiest airports in the world, at faster speeds, in a more complex airplane, in a multi-crew role.

Airline operations can be different at each airport, and are as much something to learn as flying the airplane. This is real world stuff, and you learn these operations from experience on the line.

With so much to learn beyond your initial operating experience, you lean on the experience of the Captain. Showing an interest, enthusiasm, being respectful and humble, all go a long way to encouraging the Captain to take you under his wing, to show you how to manage your new tasks, in addition to their own.

Not every Captain wants to fly with new people, it means they have an increased workload and more risk of error. While their duties include training first officers, not all want to take on initial training. Some may lack patience and get frustrated.

However, when your lack of experience is evident, having a good attitude will make the difference, and the Captains will help.

Gaining experience takes time, commonly Captains quote several hundred hours as being the typical point of reasonable experience, and even a thousand hours as still learning an airplane.
