The B-25 Mitchell was named in honor of General Billy Mitchell who was a pioneer of US military aviation.
The B-25 Mitchell had its first flight on August 19, 1940.

One of the most versatile and widely used aircraft of the Second World War was the North American B-25. Considered the best medium bomber of the war it served in every theater from the dust-choked airstrips of the South Pacific to blizzard whipped bases in the Aleutians. The B-25 was operated by the US Army Air Force, US Navy, and US Marine Corps, as well as by most of the allied countries. Over 11,000 were produced in a number of variations. The last B-25's were retired the USAF in 1959.
