The iconic (and very loud!) McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II first entered US Military Service in 1960. 5,195 Phantom IIs were manufactured from 1960 until 1981 and eleven countries other than the US had the Phantom II in their inventory.
In 1964, the VF-84 transitioned to the F-4 Phantom II and flew the F-4B, F-4J and the F-4N until they transitioned to the F-14 Tomcat in early 1976. In 1965 the squadron deployed for 7 months on board USS Independence in the Gulf of Tonkin and flew 1507 combat sorties, logging 2200 flight hours over both North and South Vietnam.
